The History of Nightsafe

Nightsafe is a local Charity set up in 1990 by a group of local people, with the aim of alleviating the plight of homeless and vulnerably housed young people within the borough of Blackburn with Darwen and surrounding area. Nightsafe now has six projects offering a practical response to meet this aim:-

Emergency Night Shelter

The shelter opened its door in December 1990 in a small terrace house on Bridge Street Blackburn, we moved to its current purpose built accommodation in 2011. The Shelter can accommodate 5 young people each night and provides bed, breakfast; evening meal plus washing facilities and support from 2 staff who help create a warm welcoming atmosphere. All young people receive resettlement advice to help find more permanent accommodation.

Platform 5 Day-centre

Our Day-centre opened in 1996 as the Fusebox in what had been the town electricity works, we moved to our present building in 2011 when the young people renamed it platform 5 as it is based next to the train station. The Centre is open each week-day to all young people aged 16 - 24 who are homeless or living in unsettled accommodation and need support to regain a stake in the community. The Day-centre offers basic facilities laundry, shower, storage, lunch and delivers a range of life skills and health workshops. These include cook & eat, drug and alcohol awareness, healthy life styles etc.

Cornfield Cliffe

Cornfield cliff opened in February 2008 as a replacement to our Woodvale project. A supported housing project situated in Darwen with 6 residential places for young people aged 16 to 24 with high support needs; there is also capacity to outreach 4 young people in their own accommodation. Each young person has their own individual support plan tailored to their own need.

Witton Project

The Witton project was Nightsafe's second project and opened its door in December 1992 as a response to the number of very young people presenting as homeless. A 4 bed supported housing project in Blackburn for young people aged 16 - 18 who have to agree to be involved in meaningful activity such as training, education, volunteering or employment. Each young person has their own individual support plan tailored to their own need. There is also capacity to outreach 4 young people in their own accommodation.

Leap Project

Starting in 2014 with funding from Children in need, the project aim is to increase life skills and education work with homeless young people aged 16 - 18 throughout Nightsafe's 4 projects, to address the following issues;-

  • 16 to 18 year olds presenting to our emergency night shelter are often in education or training, young people find this difficult to sustain while facing homelessness. The project ensures the young person has all they need to attend their course and liaise with the education provider to ensure they get the support needed at a distressing time, preventing them dropping out, increasing the chance of maintaining their social networks and settling back into the community once their housing crisis is resolved
  • 16 to 18 year olds living in our supported housing projects or using our daytime provision have often been out of the education system for some time, lack confidence and self-esteem with poor literacy and numeracy. The project introduces these young people to learning in an informal fun way through workshops and project work and the delivery of our AQA accredited Lifewise program.
Mentoring service

Starting in 2014 with BIG Lottery funding our mentor service has been developed in partnership with the Volunteer Centre. This initiative links young people who are rough sleeping, vulnerably housed or sofa surfing with a volunteer mentor who will work with them to access settled accommodation. Our volunteer co-ordinator has recruited a team of volunteer mentors giving disengaged young people the support and encouragement needed to engage with services to address the barriers to a settled life, making a difference by giving young people someone to support and befriend them at crisis point, guiding them through the process of finding accommodation helping to break the cycle of homelessness.

The range of our services allows us to take a holistic approach to our work with young people with them moving from one service to the other if required, our day time service allows us to keep contact with young people who are barred from accommodation services in the town and continue to work with them to get a second chance.
